While the role of director independence has perhaps been undertheorized (as suggested by Glom guest blogger Donald Clarke), some empirical research also suggests that director independence has little or no positive effect on firm performance (see, e.g., Bhagat and Black's article "The Non-Correlation Between Board Independence and Long-Term Firm Performance").
