Admittedly imperfect, but since it could take weeks, months, for the lab report to come back (and putting aside the independent issue of whether the “real” lab report was accurate or an Annie Dookhan special), at least it offered some chance for an innocent person to get a negative result. This past week, the Supreme Judicial Court rule that people who pled guilty in cases where evidence was mishandled by former state chemist Annie Dookhan may not be charged with more serious crimes if given a new trial and, if convicted, may not be given a worse sentence than the judge originally imposed.
