Mientras un obrero con relación laboral formal al sufrir un riesgo de trabajo que le ocasione la muerte deja a favor de su viuda e hijos el derecho a una pensión por viudez de manera vitalicia a cargo el Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, al fallecer un miembro de la policía estatal o municipal, la familia debe ir a suplicar al gobernante en turno, llámese alcalde o gobernador, les conceda como favor una pensión por cierto tiempo.
