In an egregious example, the Canadian embassy in Peru failed to support a Canadian environmental human rights defender who, in 2017, was surveilled, vilified, arrested, detained for several hours, and subjected to spurious charges by Peruvian National Police (PNP) because of her peaceful human rights advocacy, including screening of a film about rights abuses in Peru by Hudbay, a Canadian mining corporation with security contracts with PNP officers.
