I was then (mid-1980s) a graduate student (rather older than most of my classmates) in the Dept. of Religious Studies at UC Santa Barbara where the bulk of the professoriate, largely owing to Freud’s often simplistic critique of religion (mainly but not exclusively in its Judeo-Christian variations) but perhaps for other reasons as well, looked largely askance at Freud’s views on psychology and philosophy of mind.
