Fighting between the M23 rebels and the government in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has led the UN to intervene by firing on rebel positions from helicopters in the eastern region. [read post]
A UN peacekeeping mission has been deployed in the rebel-plagued eastern provinces, including North Kivu where Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have committed war crimes since 2022, including unlawful killings and sexual violence. [read post]
The decision comes at a time of increasing violence between government forces and the M23 rebel group, one of more than 100 armed groups operating in the conflict-ridden and resource-rich eastern part of the country, which has been a center of conflicts since the 1990s. [read post]
