Medical professionals later developed  an acronym using the word “Apgar” to show the criterion included in the assessment: A: Appearance (skin color) P: Pulse (heart rate) G: Grimace (reflex irritability/response) A: Activity (muscle tone) R: Respiration (breathing ability) In order to give an Apgar score, the medical professionals score the five criteria above as 0, 1, or 2, with 2 being the best score.
