To me, the most important reason is that the Federal Circuit decision just affirmed longstanding principles and it wouldn't be possible to deny copyrightability to those 7,000 lines of highly creative Java API declaring code without enormous collateral damage to software copyright as a whole. Google wrote its own implementation of the Java APIs, but, in order to allow developers to write their own programs for Android, Google's implementation used the same names, organization, and functionality as the Java APIs. [read post]
