A better approach would control for the fact that some states (e.g., Southern states) have persistently higher murders rates and then look to see what happens to murders in those states when executions rise or fall.Similarly, to tease out the effect of a Yale Law clerk, Barondes needs to hold the judge constant in the same way that we just said we have to hold the state constant to tease out the effect of an increase or decrease in executions.
