Again, students who have assimilated the gross income and employment topics can absorb the rules quite easily while those who haven't done so become even more frustrated with the course and with me.One of the assigned problems also provides the opportunity to re-visit withholding, a concept introduced early in the semester when I provided to the students an example of why a first-year law associate's take-home pay is less than gross salary. I remember that on the first day of law school, my civil procedure professor said that across the campus, what medical students are hearing themselves is "right across the campus there are a thousand students learning how to sue you"--and that's where he came in. [read post]
