The Journal describes the effects of the current sanctions imposed by the United States on two Russian banks: Bank Rossiya and SMP Bank, run by three of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s friends, have seen approximately $640 million of their assets frozen, including, based on 2013 figures, around 10% of Bank Rossiya’s total assets and 2% of SMP Bank’s assets.
