Metson had hired Andrew and Kenneth to work 14 day hitches on its ships under an agreement that they'd be paid for 12 on duty hours, but not paid for 12 on call hours, which the agreement subdivided between 8 hours of sleep time where Andrew and Kenneth had to be on the ship and 4 hours of time they could leave the ship as long as they could return to the ship within 45 minutes if contacted.
