A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, examining eight clusters of contaminated water wells in Pennsylvania and Texas, found that the wells' contamination was either from naturally occurring gas deposits -- i.e., the gas is naturally occurring within the aquifer -- or from poor casing and cementing of nearby gas wells.
