 Exposure to Clostridium difficile (bacteria often referred to as C. diff) occurs most often in hospitals and other health care settings, although a recent CDC report said that overall, health care associated infection levels have actually fallen as the medical profession has worked to prevent the bacterium's spread.Nevertheless, there has been a fivefold increase in deaths from C. diff, from approximately 2,700 to 14,500 per year.
