 Well, some of the change is clearly due to falling demand abroad, particularly in crisis-torn Europe (as the WSJ notes), but a broader look at China's exports (courtesy of Michael McDonough) indicates that there may be something bigger and more systemic going on here: The chart above makes clear that Chinese exports have steadily declined over the last 2 years across the globe, not just in Europe.
