Then perhaps Blanche Lincoln et al. could be persuaded that the cloture/filibuster system is an antidemocratic Frankenstein's monster that needs to die.Fishkin raises a lot of obviously interesting points, including the implicit argument, which I suspect is true, that even the most conservative Democrat (Ben Nelson) is to the left of the most moderate (there are no "liberal") Republicans (presumably Susan Collins or Olympia Snowe). If he thinks he's got a genuinely good (or even defensible) bill, let him insist on bringing to a vote in the Senate and then challenge Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe (or George Voinovich, who used to be a reasonably decent governor of Ohio and who doesn't have to fear a primary challenge because he's retiring) to be the senators responsible for failing to bring succor to the literally increasing numbers of Americans who are losing health insurance and/or are one… [read post]
