In order for an individual to be found guilty of mail fraud, the government must prove that the defendant knowingly created a scheme to defraud, that the defendant acted with a specific intent to defraud; that the defendant mailed something through the United States Postal Service or through a private or commercial interstate carrier for the purpose of carrying out the scheme; and that the scheme employed false material representations.
