Bernstein was insufficiently appreciated in his time as a melodist, perhaps because he was composing in an age when "serious composers" had foresworn melody -- even Aaron Copland was writing arid 12-tone music in the 1950s -- and he strove to be considered a "serious composer" even as he churned out several Broadway shows during that decade simultaneously with his "serious" music.
