It has now been discovered that post-mortem blood levels of the anesthetic thiopental from prisoners executed by lethal injection show that in many cases there is a more than 50% likelihood that the prisoner was conscious as he died and in some cases, such as the execution of Desmond Carter in 2002, there was no more than a trace of the anesthetic left in the prisoner’s system, guaranteeing consciousness.
