One of the important benefits of marriage, not surprisingly, is divorce.... at least in the sense that the laws governing the distribution of assets upon a divorce provide a vehicle for courts to attempt a fair distribution, and may be better suited for that purpose than the common law of contracts or equitable principles unguided by statutory policies adopted as part of the marriage scheme.
