Michael Mosman's role in the Bowers case made his appointment controversial in the gay community in Oregon, as Republican Senator Gordon Smith, who had recommended Mosman to the Justice Department, was generally seen as one of the handful of Republican senators who is not reflexively anti-gay and had even supported and voted in favor of some gay rights positions.
