The reasoning of these decisions varied at times, but the theme was consistent and widely understood that "a series of steps for conducting business could not be patented" (at pages 26-27 of his decision Justice Stevens cited several such cases including US Credit Sys Co v American Credit Indem Co (1893), Hotel Security Checking Co v Lorraine Co (1908), Loew's Drive-In Theatres, Inc v Park-In Theatres, Inc (1949)).
