It is a bit of a mystery how the US Army transformed itself between Operation Torch, the invasion of North Africa, where nobody seemed to know what they were doing, and the Italian campaign, which dislodged the extremely formidable German army from very defensible terrain (though Anzio seems to have been bungled, however, if you believe Ken Burns), and the invasion of France, which was certainly one of the most impressive feats of arms in the history of war.
