Because the Dodgers fielded Don Newcombe, the black pitcher who went up to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1949, where he was Rookie of the Year, MVP and the Cy Young Award, all in the same year --and became the first black pitcher to start in the World Series.Newcombe certainly qualified as a novelty or a curiosity in Nashua/Manchester in his time and no wonder: he was one of the first black ballplayers anyplace close to a major league team.  It's cheaper, there are more fun events for kids in between innings, and there's a lot of scoring, because any halfway decent pitcher generally goes straight from double-A to the major leagues, whereas there are a bunch of hitters in triple-A who could hit in the major leagues but are blocked by other hitters.Anyway, I guess I will have to see if I can catch another game this season . . . .
