The Constitution’s text says that the Chief Justice shall preside over the trial of sitting presidents, but it does not say anything one way or the other about whether the Chief Justice should preside over any other impeachments.Indeed, Chief Justice Roberts has said that because he is not required to preside, he chooses not to do so, because his day job keeps him plenty busy.
