So many Texas counties that bet on the come - overbuilding their jails hoping to cash in on contract incarceration through public-private partnerships like this one - now must eat their losses, or rather pass them on to taxpayers. [read post]

As Grits has reported in the past, a similar fiscal drama is playing out with the "Doomsday Deal" in McLennan County and a long list of empty, speculative jails in Texas, so unless there's a new source of prisoners out there - private prison firms are banking on immigration detention - this may not be the last Texas jail or prison unit we see auctioned off like some defaulted property on the steps of the county courthouse.RELATED: From the… [read post]

The Nation Salvador Licea was arrested for driving with his driver's license expired and now faces deportation because of Secure Communities, a program in which all Texas counties participate. 80 percent of the 118 immigrants McLennan County has transferred into ICE custody since January 2010 who were non-criminals or accused of low-level traffic or misdemeanor offenses.
