Then Tower Records came to town during the 1980s and basically drove the local merchants out of business, even though its prices were high, because the selection in classical at their two outlets -- near NYU in the Village and near Lincoln Center on the West Side -- was just enormous, and included lots of independent labels and European and Japanese imports to which the other stores didn't seem to have access.
