In addition to being somewhat cheaper, natural gas contributes less to climate change per unit burned than does coal, which has in turn led to a more favorable regulatory regime (although fracking to produce natural gas brings its own set of environmental harms, which makes natural gas at best a transition fuel en route to reliance solely on solar, wind, and other fully carbon-neutral energy sources).
