Two astronomy post-docs at Berkeley announced yesterday that they had discovered the brightest supernova ever, a supernova of the sort that may have been common in the early universe, and would have played an important role in generating and dispersing the heavier-than-hydrogen-and-helium elements necessary for the formation of planets and evolution of life, but that is quite rare in the more recent past.
