30 - From the research I've done on this topic, I believe that the media ownership companies (Viacom, Universal, etc) are going to begin to sue schools where illegal downloading is rampant under some sort of vicarious/ contributory theory (that doesn't really exist in the law). [read post]

EFF and CDT also each submitted amicus briefs supporting Google in its two most important recent litigations: Viacom’s suit against Google’s YouTube unit for copyright infringement, and a suit by Rosetta Stone, the language course company, challenging Google’s practices of auctioning off other companies’ trademarks for use as paid-search keywords and allowing them to be used in ad text as well. While creators and distributors have not rejected UGC (companies like Veoh and Viacom signed up to the UGC Principles), Google is still bashing it out with YouTube in court (and from what I hear has yet to pay indies) and did not sign up to the UGC Principles, having some litigation principles of their own, apparently. The copyright holder need only allege the site is “dedicated to infringing activity” — as say Viacom alleges about YouTube, and if the ad service or credit card company does not quickly sever ties, they can be held liable. [read post]
