Despite all the talk of fixed fees and discounted rates, a new Altman Weil survey reveals that law firms are not doing anything dramatic and are not planning to do anything dramatic in response to the economic downturn.Altman Weil distributed a survey to 687 firms with 50 or more lawyers, asking about how the firms were dealing with strategy, growth, pricing, staffing and business development in light of the current economy. Revenue is now being driven solely by hourly rate increases, the last remaining income enhancement button that law firms can press and one they will presumably continue to press until it no longer responds…as has been the case every year since 2011, the 2015 Altman Weil survey of Chief Legal Officers found that more law departments decreased their spend on outside law firms than increased it.
