The death of barrister Mark Saunders, shot by police officers after he had fired a shotgun from the window of his flat, is being investigated by the IPCC, and will then be the subject of an inquest, so it would not be right to speculate about exactly what happened.Just one thing though: here's a photograph of armed officers during the incident: Can any of our police readers explain why it was necessary for some of these officers to wear the sort of balaclavas that used to be… [read post]

The Telegraph today reports that the family of Mark Saunders are to take legal action against the police, claiming that he should not have been killed because he was using a shotgun loaded with pellets for hunting game and posed no "imminent threat". [read post]

The inquest into the death of Mark Saunders was told this morning that he was shot at least five times, with more than one type of bullet.Comparisons will inevitably be made with the killing of Jean Charles de Menezes in 2005, but there is of course one essential difference: de Menezes was unarmed.
