It's literally been decades since I read Christopher Isherwood's novel, A Single Man, so I have to take it on faith from the various reviews and feature articles I've seen that the film takes substantial liberties with the book, and perhaps should be described as "inspired by" Isherwood's novel, the core plotting point being retained and much else adjusted.
