On the one hand the rocks: (1) the vanguard role of the United States in the shadow of which Europe was able to prosper at someone else's expense (but one understands that there is nothing  more hateful than gratitude and worse gratitude for an old debt that never seems to be paid in full), and (2) the backwash of empire in the form of migration and internal cultural decay and cultural transformation.
