I cannot improve on Professor Vikram Amar's Verdict column explaining the meaning of direct and indirect taxes, but the point of the 16th Amendment was to say that even though the Court was wrong, the income tax is no longer subject to its misguided holding: "The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.
