When I became a Canadian citizen, I admit I swore an oath to Queen Elizabeth II reluctantly, but now better appreciating the role of a separate head of state, I echo the comments Diane Francis made on this point: although she was not a monarchist, when she became a citizen, she “realized the oath wasn’t about upholding the monarchy or pledging fealty to a King or Queen.
