On this day in ... ... 2005, at a diplomatic conference, states parties to the 1949 Geneva Conventions on the laws of war established establishes a new emblem -- the red crystal -- that serves alongside the red cross and red crescent as symbols of the International Committee of the Red Cross, the nongovernmental organization charged with monitoring compliance with Geneva law.
