I suppose an overwhelming groundswell might be too large to ignore, but Republicans have shown that they are very capable of doing overwhelmingly unpopular things, on issues ranging from gun control to abortion rights to immigration and beyond, getting away with it every time.And I cannot end this part of the discussion without pointing out that the American press corps has again proved itself incapable of calling Republicans on their outrages.
