I make it voluntary, however, on the assumptions that 1) it would be very onerous to review in detail 80 such answers at two or three points in the semester, especially when 2) not all students would have the time or the inclination to put any real effort into the exercise if it were mandatory but ungraded, and 3) some students don't really need the practice anyway.
