  According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there are more than 4 million fewer serious crimes per year in the United States today than there were before mandatory minimums were in place.[11]  To reduce sentences for drug traffickers would not only put more dangerous criminals back on the streets sooner, but it would send the message that the United States government lacks the will or is not serious about combatting drug crimes in the midst of a deadly epidemic.
