  A micro entity is defined as an applicant that is assigning the invention to an institution of higher education or an applicant that did not in the preceding calendar year have a gross income exceeding three times the median household income for the preceding calendar year ($49,445 in 2010), as most recently reported by the Bureau of the Census.
