 The premise that STECs are not so much pathogens as carriers for a very potent toxin and that therefore they are not so much examples of infectious diseases as they are of a potent colonic toxicosis (which develops later into a toxemia) would be more convincing if evidence were in hand showing that these disease states could be attained without the detectable presence of STEC at all.
