Of course, with regard to chattel slavery, we might well agree with Lincoln's unwillingness to give ground on extension of slavery into the territories, though we should also realize that full acceptance of this argument calls into question the validity of the "rotten compromises" made in 1787 with slaveowners in order to get the Constitution in the first place.
