In a similar vein, the economic argument against legalizing blackmail (leaving aside the moral argument for the time being) is that legalizing blackmail would provide people with incentives to invest their time and energy into collecting information with no social value — after all, the whole economic logic of blackmail (from the perspective of the blackmailer) is to essentially collect information and sell it back to the blackmail victim.
