 I confess I tend to be a devotee of Andrew Jackson's statement in his Bank Veto that Supreme Court decisions are entitled "to only so much respect as their reasoning" entitles them to, and of Holmes's proclamation in The Path of the Law that it is "revolting" to have no better reason for doing something than the fact that so it was done in the reign of Henry IV.
