Health officials believe that this Illinois Salmonella outbreak may be connected to the current nationwide outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul associated with tomatoes because one of the cases has been confirmed to have a genetic fingerprint that matches the national outbreak pattern.As of June 24, 2008, the CDC reports that there are 613 confirmed cases of Salmonella Saintpaul in 33 states and the District of Columbia associated with eating raw tomatoes.
