  It requires little deep thought to recall the prohibitions against marriage across religious communities (as a religious taboo), the consequences of marriage across ethno-national lines (it was not long ago that even marriages between European ethno-national communities in the United States was viewed within immigrant communities as scandalous), and, of course, across racial lines (though it must be remembered that the differences between race and ethnicity is porous and ambiguous).
