  To paraphrase a blog post by our own John Pottow, the crisis was created due to an accretion of systemic risk on a consumer-by-consumer basis because of overleverage driven largely by mortgages, but also because of stagnant incomes, rising costs of living (medical, education, housing), and a turn to financial products (credit cards, debit overdraft, payday, etc.) to finance daily expenses (as well as some extravagances).
